Abangan Islam in Tolaki Society: A Review of History, Culture and Education (Islam Abangan pada Masyarakat Tolaki: Suatu Tinjauan Sejarah, Budaya dan Pendidikan)
Abstract
Tolaki culture is a collection of experiences throughout the lives of the Tolaki people, through various eras, until it becomes the style that appears today. This situation will continue throughout the lifetime of the universe. This study has shown that Tolaki culture can survive in various phases, adapting to various experiences. The phase of the relationship between Tolaki culture and Islam is a very important phase because it is in this part that the Tolaki people become Islamicized without abandoning their cultural roots. Although this meeting, especially for the Tolaki community in the interior or mountains, left a record of the birth of abangan Islam among the Tolaki people, a label given to adherents of Islam who are not ideological because they are closer to local traditions. This is influenced by the Islamic education infrastructure which does not support the creation of a Tolaki society that is closer to its religion. Apart from that, the social and political conditions during the Old Order and New Order also contributed to the distance between the Tolaki people and the religion they adhered to, for example restrictions on the use of the headscarf. This condition began to change with the presence of madrasas, Islamic boarding schools and Islamic universities. Apart from that, the phenomenon of urban Muslims in the mosque-based tarbiyah movement which touches village children who study at public universities, when they return home, also contributes to the rise of Islam in the Tolaki people.
